Board of Directors

I was made aware of the St. Francis Sculpture Garden over 10 years ago while attending a formation program at Marywood offered by the Dominican Sisters~ Grand Rapids. We were asked to take some time to be with creation, contemplate and reflect on our belovedness. This invitation nudged me to seek solace in nature and I found myself sitting on a bench in the garden with St. Francis and St. Clare nearby as prayerful companions.

Growing up in rural Michigan on a dairy farm. I felt grounded and aware in intimate ways of the interconnectivity of our bond to the land and all spiritual beings. I was supported by the elements that enfold our daily experiences holding and informing our lives. I received my higher education in Biological Science from Northwestern University. Later I became a Physical Therapist and attained further education to practice as a Registered Respiratory Therapist working in hospitals in Cincinnati, OH as well as Mt. Clemens, Lansing and Grand Rapids Michigan. After answering a vocational call to become a Spiritual Director in 2013 and completing the formation program offered by Dominican Center Marywood, I then pursued a Doctorate degree in Theological Ministries and Spiritual Direction.

A favorite quote of mine from St. Francis of Assisi is,“before you practice peace you must first have it in your heart.”

Our world today is filled with endless distractions and noise. Being in the garden reawakens my sense of wonder and awe. It gives me a place to pause and appreciate how the earth cares for me and I for it. Spending time in the garden is a reminder to practice spiritual mindfulness. The natural environment of our beautiful sculptures nestled within the garden paths allow me to return to myself, and to return home to my natural instincts of having peace in my heart.
